Cabo Pulmo
Words can simply not do any justice to this spectacular Jem of
Los Cabos. Cabo Pulmo is a protected National Marine Park located
just 40 miles North of San Jose del Cabo on the eastern cape of
Los
Cabos. Cabo Pulmo is the only hard coral reef found in the
Sea of Cortez. It is also one of three living North American reefs
and the only living Coral Reef on the Western side of North
America!
Cabo Pulmo National Park offers nutrient rich waters attracting
birds, mammals, a vast web of Invertebrates, fishes, sharks,
ect
resulting in making the Sea of Cortez one of the most productive
waters in the world! Cabo Pulmo has more terrific dive sites
than we care to mention, below you will find brief descriptions
of some
of this Marine Parks highlights.
El Bajo
Located close to the edge of the submarine canyon, this reef
is located only about a mile from shore with excellent visibility
and a gentle current. It runs south to North and is a great
drift dive. With sand on both sides you might get the chance
to witness the sting rays reproduce during the winter months.
The reef has 7 kinds of corals (hard and soft) along with
large schools of reef fish, Turtles, Eels, Groupers, and Whalesharks
during the season.
El Cantil (The Ledges)
This is the largest reef in Cabo Pulmo, it begins near the beach
and it goes two miles out into the Sea of Cortez. This reef
is about 40 yards wide and is shaped like a bunch of fingers,
covered in corals it takes on the look of rolling country
side hills. This is a great site for all level of Scuba Divers
with
a max depth of 50 feet. During this great dive look out for
Hammerheads, White Tips, Reef Sharks, Manta Rays, Amber Jacks,
Dog Snappers, and Garden Eels.
The Wreck
The Mexican fishing vessel—Colima sunk during a storm back
in 1939. It lays approximately 2 ½ kilometers North
of Punta Cabo Pulmo and now serves as a small sanctuary for
small
reef fish, large fish, and scores of Garden Eels. The Colima
offers the added bonus of a wreck dive for scuba enthusiasts,
a spectacular addition to Cabo Pulmo.
El Islote (Rock Island)
This small island that rises a mere 10 feet above the surface
of the Sea of Cortez. This dive site is at a depth of 60
feet and is a blast due to all the giant Sea Fans and the
life found
hiding on them. The boulder formations are home to Octopus,
Eels, Parrot Fish, Pargo, even the rare Stone Scorpion
Fish.
Los Frailes
If you are interest in blue water diving then this would be a
good choice for you. The main interest is to test out you
luck and see if you can sight any Whalesharks, large Manta or Diamond
Rays. This dive ranges in depth between 80-140 feet.
Las Casitas
I know some of you like to explore caves and crevices. This is
the best spot (in fact one of the only spots) to fulfill
your dark explorations, the reward is the most incredible Cup Coral
around! Due to all the nooks and cranies you will find all
sorts of different species even the occasional Frog Fish
and
Jew Fish.
Sea Lyon Colony
This is a real special thing to experience, these beautiful mammals
love to play. Both kids and adults can have a great time watching
them play, especially during the spring (their mating season)
when they’re the most active. You will also be able to
spot all sorts of colorful Tropical Fish, Garden Eels, and
Sea Urchins.
